SharePoint - Moving Large Amounts of Files

Even with OneDrive sync in place (where your files are synced to your local machine) there can be major issues when trying to move/copy large amounts of files from one folder to another. This is because OneDrive has to then sync these changes up to the cloud, and across to the rest of the team.

Instead, we strongly recommend moving/deleting large amounts of files directly from inside the web interface.

This allows a web to web transfer, and is not reliant on your local PC speed or internet.

Accessing the Web

If you know the direct URL, you can just open this. Otherwise if you right-click within your synced folder and select View online.

Note: Your screenshot may differ from the below example.

This will open your SharePoint site within your default browser.

Move Files to another Site

Each "folder" within your top level sync folder is its own SharePoint site.

In the below example I wanted to move files from "Project - Azure Migration" into "TeamSales", so the steps below will reflect this.

Once inside SharePoint, select the folder/files you wish to Move.

From the top menu, select "Move To"

From the popup on the Right Hand Side, check underneath your Company name - if you cannot see the Site you need, click "Browse Sites". You may need to expand a few times before the site you want appears. Once it is present, click your site.

You can then navigate through any sub folders as needed until you find the right location - otherwise you can click "move here" to place it at the top of the folder.

Your files will then start moving. Once completed, the files will disappear from the original Site and appear in the new one. Your local OneDrive sync may take a while to catch up, but the files should be removed from the old location and added to the new one.
